Hello World!

 

Yesterday was a dream come true. 

After a productive meeting where we finalized the project’s calendar, I was handed the very first .apk file of the game. One small step for Equinoxis, yet a giant leap for the project - our vision’s very first “hello world”!

As I loaded the game and tried out its physics for the first time, I could feel an overwhelming surge of emotion taking me to tears. Seeing the game take shape in its barebones form was like watching seeds sprout for the first time. Months of planning, working, and hoping culminated in the first proof of technical viability. Not only are we on the same page, the physics are incredibly entertaining.

This is still the beginning, of course. The game is in its earliest form, and there’s much work ahead. From here on, it’s about adding layers to take this vision to its full potential. I’m grateful to be working with the talented team at Equinoxis Studios, whose round-the-clock efforts ensure that we keep moving forward.

I can’t wait to share more updates as we go forward.

From Courtroom to Code: My First Videogame

My name is Antonio Noboa. I work as an attorney-at-law in the city of Guayaquil, in the beautiful country of Ecuador. Tired of the harsh muse that is the practice of Law in my country, I decided to pursue one of my life-long dreams: Making a videogame. 

Ecuador is currently facing significant economic and energy crisis amidst a violent crime wave. Every day we are used to losing power for at least eight hours. Quitting my day job to focus exclusively on game development isn’t feasible. This led me to find Equinoxis Studios, one of Ecuador’s few dedicated game development companies. Equinoxis quickly gained my trust with their team of professionals, led by Diego Narváez. 

Their experience with their last game, "Chakana, Gold of the Gods", convinced me they were the right fit to help make my vision a reality. After meeting their team, following a long negotiation process, we signed our contract on November 5.

This contract is huge for me in several ways. Not only am I committing half a year’s resources to the project, but I’m also stepping in the new and challenging world of game development. The mere thought of it makes me shake, but as my father used to say, "If the challenge does not make you shake in your boots, it is not big enough for you."

While an NDA restricts me from sharing technical details, I can say this about the project: It is a mobile Battle Royale with distinct Soviet aesthetic, designed to be easy to pick up and hard to master. I look forward for the gameplay potential of the game and I believe it could really shine for VR one day. 

In this blog I will share the adventure that is independently funding the development of a videogame as a professional in a country such as Ecuador, collaborating with a remote indie game studio, and navigating the journey from lawyer to game developer.
